Part one: April 7th from 10am until noon – Cutting and Shaping
Part two: April 21st from 10am until noon – Texturing, Sanding & Smoothing
Part three: May 11th from 11am until 1pm – Gemstone Setting Prep and Polishing
Skills Taught:
In part one, we will explore how the hand held Flex Shaft Tool can be used to accomplish big feats, all at the bench! There are numerous different cutting and shaping bits and burrs that can be used to create fine details in metal. There will be some demonstrations done to sheet metal to create a piece of jewelry that will be finished at the end of this three part series. There will be additional demonstrations done on sheet metal that is not part of our piece of jewelry. Discussion will follow, including a list of names of these bits and burrs as well as Karen’s availability to sell them and/or where to find them.
In part two, we will continue to work on our piece of jewelry by adding textures and sanding/smoothing with more Flex Shaft bits and burrs. There is a lot to explore here and our demonstrations will also include sheet metal that is not part of the piece of jewelry we are making. Discussion with a list of bit and burr names, Karen’s availability to sell them and/or where to find them will follow.
In part three, we will be creating seats directly into sheet metal for flush setting a gemstone, seats in tube settings for setting both cabochon and faceted gemstones, and cutting notches into a prong setting for a faceted gemstone.
We will be demonstrating the many different polishing bits and processes to put a final polish on our jewelry project and additional sheet metal. There is a lot of ground to cover in this skill share.
The setting of the stones will happen in a different skill share, date and time TBA.
Why These Skills Are Important: Understanding these concepts can greatly increase the quality and value of your finished jewelry. Learning that small and fine details can be accomplished with Flex Shaft bits and burrs can also prove to be very cost effective and create less waste during the creation process.
