What is Glass Slumping, Fusing, and Flameworking?
Flameworking
Glass flameworking involves using a torch to melt and manipulate rods or tubes of glass into intricate shapes and designs. The high heat allows you to bend, stretch, and sculpt the glass with precision, creating anything from delicate beads and small sculptures to more complex artistic pieces.
Slumping
Slumping is a technique where a sheet of glass is heated in a kiln until it softens and “slumps” into or over a mold to take on its shape. This method is often used to create bowls, plates, and other functional or decorative items. The process allows for smooth, flowing contours and can be combined with other techniques, such as fusing, to add layers of color and texture to the finished piece.
Fusing
Glass fusing involves layering pieces of glass together and heating them in a kiln until they meld into a single, cohesive piece. You can combine different colors, shapes, and textures of glass to create unique designs and patterns. Fusing is a versatile technique, enabling the creation of everything from intricate jewelry to large, striking panels and sculptures.
