Description
Join us for a fun, hands-on workshop where the whole family creates art together!
In this printmaking workshop designed for families, even the youngest artists have an important role. Whether you’re a seasoned maker or new to art, all skill levels are welcome—this experience is about collaboration, creativity, and connection.
Together, families will explore the collagraph method, a form of relief printmaking using everyday materials like cardboard, glue, and colored pencils. Each family will work as a team to create a series of bold black-and-white prints on colorful, hand-drawn paper backgrounds. The final artworks will be striking, meaningful pieces that reflect both individuality and unity—a true celebration of family dynamics through art.
What You’ll Learn & Do: There are three aspects to this project, and each can be adjusted to fit what the family needs.
- First, families will create one or more 5×7″ printmaking plates using repurposed materials (cardboard from cereal boxes), quick drying glue, and scissors.
- Secondly, other family members will have lots of white 8×10″ paper which they will freely draw on using color pencils with the understanding that these papers will be printed on later using the plate and black ink.
- Third when the plate is dry, it will be rolled with black printmaking ink, then using one of the papers that was colored on, the plate will be pressed onto the center of the paper, leaving a stark black image on top of the colorful drawing.
- Families will be able to continue printing the same or different plate onto their other papers. The finished artworks will have lovely contrasts between bold black images and playful organic forms in color; perfectly illustrating the family dynamics of order and play.
Each family will leave with a beautiful series of artworks that combine structured imagery and playful hand-drawn color—a perfect metaphor for creative family life!
