Description
Make a Tiny Grief Book – A Book Arts Workshop
In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn to bind little “grief books,” pocket-sized tomes containing text adapted (with acknowledgment) from How to Go On Living When Someone You Love Dies by Therese Rando (Bantam Books, 1991), and beautiful original art created and donated specifically for the books by local watercolorist Maggie Orion. To see examples of finished books, visit the Grief Book Project’s website. No previous bookbinding experience is needed, and all materials are prepared and provided for you.
This is part of a larger community mutual aid practice; participants have the option to keep all the books they make, or to donate one or more to local grief counseling efforts.
What You’ll Learn:
- The anatomy of a book and how to create case-bound covers, applicable to any homemade journal project
- Bookbinding Basics: How to fold, kettle stitch, and assemble a small hard-cover book using simple tools.
What You’ll Create:
- At least one little grief book, 2.6″ x 2″, with the option to make more in the extra time
- A new connection to a local network of makers who hand-bind grief books on an ongoing basis.
Class Details:
- Ages: Adults & teens 13+
- Skill Level: Beginner-friendly—no prior bookbinding experience required!
- Fee: $75
- Class Size: Minimum 5 / Maximum 7 participants
