Beginning Machine Sewing: Make Throw Pillows
No Experience is necessary
In this beginner’s class, you’ll finish a basic throw pillow with a zipper closure. You do not need any prior machine sewing experience. A 21″ x 21″ pillow insert and zipper are included in the class price. You may make a patchwork pillow or a single/print color version. I will have patterns for both styles.
Bring your machine or use the studio machines and learn the very basics of machine sewing. You will learn how to thread the machine and bobbin, easy tricks to sewing straight, learn about seam allowances, machine tension, problem-solving, and all basic mechanisms of the domestic machine. Then we will be ready to tackle our first project–a Throw Pillow with washable cover! With this project you will learn how to sew in a zipper!
If you own a sewing machine in good working order, please feel free to bring it (and the zipper foot), or use one of The Forge machines in the classroom.
Our sewing room is equipped with all the basic supplies you will need to complete your project. Additional sewing supplies are available to purchase from the teacher if desired.
What to bring to class:
- One yard of woven fabric (not knit) or purchase fabric from The Curious Forge (approx. $15 – 20)
- Optional: Bring your sewing machine and supplies to class, or use one of the Curious Forge machines in the classroom
- If desired, you may purchase additional sewing supplies from the instructor (scissors, pins etc.) bring extra cash
- Bring a bag lunch and drink for lunch break (There is no food available near The Curious Forge)

Please note: All classes require a minimum number of participants and may be rescheduled if that minimum is not met. If this happens, we’ll let you know in advance and work with you to get you into the next available class.
Cancellation Policy
Please review our cancellation policy before booking. If you need to cancel your registration, you must notify us at least 7 days before the class start time to receive a refund. Cancellations made within 7 days are non-refundable.
